Hi friends.
Today we will write 1000 words. Because we want to get into it with ourselves. We want to learn what the hell is going on in our head. One thousand words a day is excavation time.
To me that is always one of the most urgent and fascinating parts of any writing project. I don’t always know what I know or what I feel sometimes. And I’m not always aware of what I’m capable of inventing. But by the end of it, I’m sure going to find out.
Sometimes I look back at one of my books years later and remember a certain feeling or moment or idea and it surprises me. I’m always so grateful to have a record of that moment in time.
But you don’t need to write a whole book to have that sensation. I can have a new understanding of myself at the end of any given workday, simply when I scan through whatever work I’ve accomplished. What I’m digging for is the truth, emotional or otherwise. What I live for is the surprises. The excitement of the revelations of my brain.
I’ve said this a hundred times before but writing is an incredible opportunity in so many ways. But it’s not just about selling an essay or getting an agent or a book deal or a speaking engagement or a teaching gig or whatever financial or professional shift you might want to get out of it. It’s about personal growth and figuring out who the hell you are.
One thousand words is nothing in a lifetime of getting to know yourself. What you believe, what you have to say, and what you are capable of accomplishing.
You’re at the halfway mark. Good luck today.

1012 and done! Imperfect but on the page.
1449, left it mid-scene to pick up again, later. Anyone else love Day Three? Day Three of #mini1000 and #1000wordsofsummer always brings the magic and connections, threads coming together and ideas finally coming from the ether and landing on the page. That's the gift. Big thanks to Jami and happy writing today, friends.
