If you’re interested, there is #1000wordsofsummer merch (t-shirts and mugs) here. It’s pretty cute stuff. Thanks, as always, to Jacques Pierre Francois for the logo. I’ll be on twitter in the afternoons. Use the #1000wordsofsummer hashtag if you want to connect with other folks. The slack is closed for the summer.
Thanks, Jami. I'm writing about sorrow and grief as I move through an indescribably sad experience. I was going to skip writing and thought no, I'll try to get into words what I'm feeling and living. We aren't great at this sort of thing in western culture so perhaps I can add my voice to a body of work about grief. (Sorry this isn't more uplifting! In the end, I think it will be in that it's in grief you come to know a deeper joy.)
Finally finally transitioned off of pandemic response work and trying to refocus on making time for writing. I’ve been chipping away at a novel for a few years while balancing a global health career, and I’ve stockpiled these 1,000 Days of Summer missives over the last couple of years in hopes of getting to do the 1,000 days on my own when the time came. Thank you so much for creating this space, Jami--even though I didn’t have the time to write, the daily messages were often the only lifeline to my creative life, which at times felt very far away.
Thanks, Jami. This is right on time. I’ve been clearing the decks and reorganizing the framework for novel #2, a sequel of sorts to The Italian Prisoner. Ready to dive into generating some new words and get back into a productive writing rhythm.
Kids start school this week, so I’m using this to get back into my two main projects, middle grade and adult, using one as a break from the other. The 1000 words don’t have to do anything except get me back in regular practice.
Thanks all- as I'm revising my nonfiction book about comedy theory, I realized that I needed to include a series of short essays defining and explaining specific comedy tools that I reference elsewhere. I'm using this week to write those. This mini was perfect timing for me - one more week until I go back on contract.
I'm working on a second draft of my second book (a sequel to my first) which is under contract and on a very short deadline, and proving a complicated story so far. Was desperate to get a first draft down, so there are a lot of gaps to fill in, plus a lot of changes to make. Also, I'm rewriting completely from scratch, which I've never done before. Thanks Jami for this push to get some solid, thoughtful work done!
Good morning! Thank you for creating this space, Jami, and for your short note. It has me jazzed up! I recently moved and am settled enough now to dive back into my creative work. I have a special feeling about this new environment.
I am working on the sequel to my unpublished historical novel. Sequels suck, and it's a harder uphill struggle when I can't find a home for the first one. I am 20,000 words in and stuck. Need this push so thanks for #1000wordofsummer!!!
I'm revising an unpublished work and hoping to eliminate 1000 words a day. That counts, right?
Oooh I love this spin on things! Clarity awaits!
I’m 12 scenes away from the end of this book. 1000 words a day will get me close enough to *see* the finish line.

Ahhh that's so nice Jessica. Glad you're getting back into it, good luck!
I'm going to go through my index cards, find a word or phrase that seems promising and go from there.

Same timing for me. Back to school soon, but for now we write!

With luck you should be able soonish.🤞

I thought I was writting a book on how to be an artist but Im realizing its an essay collection about my grandma
I've spent all year thinking I was writing a book about my grandma, but I'm realizing it might actually be a memoir about creativity and home.
oo love this weaving. Something about Grandmas eh?
Playing with haiku for the first time since grade school—it should be fun! (Obviously not taking the 1000 words literally.)

I'm working on a ghost story about existential dread and zombies.
Wish me luck.
