Hi friends.
Today we will write 1000 words for ourselves and no one else. You are here because you need it. You need this time, and you need this contemplation. So let’s be spirited with our efforts and let’s be protective of our time. Today is just for us. These are our hours. Let’s use them. Get those words down on the page. Together, now, we write.
I’ve said before that I write my first draft for me, my second draft for my editor, and my third draft for everyone else. As I work on generating fresh pages for a new novel these next few days, I am going to operate in that mindset. No matter where you’re at in your process, I invite you to join me. This one’s just for you.
Welcome to the Mini 1000. If you’re new here, these are the basics:
You will get a short letter from me, every day, for the next five days, encouraging you to write.
I will leave the comments open on these letters for you to post your word count or to cheer each other on.
If you’re interested, you are welcome to post under #1000wordsofsummer on twitter or instagram or wherever you like. It’s a good way to find each other. Go on and take a second to like a few posts. Support each other.
And if you’ve found your way here from somewhere else, you can learn more about me here. The very short version is I’ve written 9 books and the tenth is coming out September 24, and if you’d like to support me, please consider pre-ordering the book.
Before we go I want to add one more thing. We are coming out of August. August is garbage. Maybe we consumed too much this month. Maybe we felt stuck. All that sunscreen on our skin. Squinting every day in the sun. So let’s take a moment this first day and just get rid of August on the page. Write a paragraph, clear it out. So we can embrace the fall. Clearer heads. Clearer times. Goodbye, August.
Now let’s go, everyone! These books won’t write themselves.

You are reading Mini 1000, an infrequent newsletter encouraging you to write from Jami Attenberg. My main newsletter is Craft Talk. I’m also on twitter and instagram.
OK 1008 for me on the last day of work for my character before the writer's strike started, and I'm going to walk the dog now! Good luck
Good morning, everyone! Long-time supporter of this project, first-time participant. Though I've been a subscriber for a while, I always felt a pang of disappointment (maybe grief?) when I didn't commit to fully participating, or wrote for one day and then didn't continue. This time, I'm doing the full Mini 1000, and my goals are to 1.) start (and maybe, goddess forbid, enjoy) my own regular writing practice, 2.) generate a bunch of new material and see what stands out to me, and 3.) join a community to make real this solo, sometimes isolating journey. So, I wrote 1,111 words this morning (I'm in Berlin, so I got a head start!) and I am so excited to continue and to cheer everyone on!
