Hi friends.
Today you will write 1000 words, and so will I.
We will put our heads down and focus on the notebook or legal pad or cocktail napkin or computer screen or whatever it is we’re writing on, and we will be diligent and directed and composed, and we will pull these words out of thin air. We will cause them to exist. We will create them.
This is the best thing we will do with our time today. This is the gift we’re giving ourselves: being devoted to our art and our ideas and our feelings and our voices. Because we believe in ourselves. We are writing because we know we have something to say, something that is worth being heard. And we are executing our dreams and our goals because that is who we are: we are the people who get our work done.
I am confident you can do this. You are here, and you want to do it. I have faith in you.
Good luck today.
Jami
p.s. Yesterday I wrote sex scenes all day and it was great and I felt goddamn alive and I highly recommend it. What’s your favorite kind of thing to write?
You are reading the #Mini1000, an offshoot of #1000wordsofsummer and the Craft Talk newsletter from Jami Attenberg. My most recent book is I Came All This Way To Meet You: Writing Myself Home available at all bookstores, and definitely your local indie.
Continuing my delayed challenge. 1500 new words today. Not words that belong in a final draft, but this is an outline/first draft freewrite, and I came up with at least 4 new scenes today, even if I just jotted down a couple paragraphs about what should happen in each. This jumpstart is doing what it needs to.
940 new words today. Those came after a few hours of re-reading, light editing, research, and note-making. Big conceptual strides here, not the least of which was getting a glimpse, at last, of the large structural elements of this novel. It feels both more do-able and more daunting!
