Day 2, Summer 2025, Mini 1000
We're all just trying to figure our shit out.
Hi friends.
Today we will write 1000 words. Together. Because we are trying to uncover who we are in the layers of our words, ideas, feelings. When we write, even if we aren’t directly writing about ourselves, we’re still trying to understand ourselves better in one way or another. It’s therapeutic, the writing. It works on us even when we don’t even know it’s happening. A day of writing is a step—even if it’s a petite one—in the greater trip of becoming ourselves.
Yesterday I was texting with a friend about a personal issue, and then I realized I had sent him four different messages, each containing one perfectly realized idea about what was going on, and I said, “I should probably just write about it.” That’s usually how I know when I’m onto something. If the next step to figuring something out is just to write about it already.
I’m always working towards a healthier or at least more clarified version of myself through my writing. Sometimes it’s that I’m dissecting an alternate universe version of a personal dilemma in my fiction, or sometimes I’m clearly interrogating my deeper inner truths in my non-fiction. I don’t know what I would do without my writing, without digging as deep as I have with it for most of my life.
I imagine it’s the same for you, too. If you’re on here this sunny Saturday, showing up to write side-by-side with strangers. You’re in search of something. And I’m glad you’re here.
Good luck with your 1000 words today. I hope you find what you’re looking for.
Jami
p.s. If you’ve arrived here because someone has forwarded this to you, you can find more about this project here and here.

1017 words of my project proposal for residency/fellowship applications! Verrry rough but there was really something there. Good luck everyone!
1214 on my phone at a cafe table in Seattle where I met a few friends for the adventure that is Worldcon. It’s so inspiring to be in another city, the solo walk, the mosaics, the corner cafe w the good green juice and friendly dogs, the mermaid/Klingon/elf costumes, the brainy writers, nerdy in cool nerdy writer ways I’m not, always inspiring. Learning. The words. Always the words. Thx for doing this!
