Hi friends.
Today you will write 1000 words. So will I. There are more than three thousand of us writing here this week. Together, we got this.
Every day we are fighting for our attention span. It is ours, and we must claim it. So we can read and write and make our art and change our lives in small and big ways alike.
Here’s what I just did: I sat down, closed my eyes, took a deep breath, held the breath, cleared my head for a moment, shut out all the damn noise of this planet, held the breath a little longer than that, and then exhaled. I found the center point where all the words and ideas lived, really honed into that place, tap-tap-tapped into it, and let it flow. All I need is a trickle to get started. All I need is a little stream to get to work.
It’s time for you to take that deep breath too, or some version of it. You’re showing up here, today, because that center point where all your creative stuff lives is one of your favorite places to be. And it’s not just about your capacity to express yourself. Or how talented you are at writing a sentence. It’s also about your hunger and desire to get words down on a page, and to create some kind of change from that. All those things live together inside of you. What a gift it is to be able to acknowledge them, access them, and free them up to thrive.
So let’s strive, together, to quiet the noise of the world around us and tap into that creative place for the next six days. Let’s carve out this moment to do our work, make our art.
One thousand words a day, let’s go.
Comments are open. Good luck.

You are reading the #Mini1000, an offshoot of #1000wordsofsummer and the Craft Talk newsletter from Jami Attenberg. My most recent book is I Came All This Way To Meet You: Writing Myself Home available at all bookstores, and definitely your local indie.
1072 over here. Messy but I've seen messier. Glad you're all being productive this morning! <3
1084 and the best I can say about them is that they -are- words.
